How many grams of Sugar do you consume?

5:10:00 PM

Assuming that one teaspoon is 4.745gm, and that you are a normal human being with a good taste for food, you have:

Every day:                2 cups of coffee/ tea – 3 teaspoons total
2 slices of bread or equivalent – 10 teaspoons total
1 cup vegetable, or curry or soup – 3 teaspoons total
1 bowl of cereal – 2 teaspoons total

Weekly:                    1 pastry/ cake/ sweet – 10 teaspoons
                                1 milkshake/ juice – 4 teaspoons
                                1 Soda – 10 teaspoons

Monthly:                   1 Party where you hog like crazy on stuff like this – 50 teaspoons in total
                                1 Ice-cream cup – 40 teaspoons

Yearly:                      If an Indian – Lots of sweets, which we will ignore.
                                                Ganesh Chaturthi – Modak
                                                Holi – Puran Poli
                                                Dassera – Shrikhanda
And infinite reasons to have Gulab Jamuns, Rasgullas, Rabdi, Barfis, Vadi, Paak etc etc…

(If you make 40 Gulab Jamuns, you usually end up using atleast 500gm sugar, equivalent of around 100 teaspoons. Of these, each one eats atleast 10 Gulab Jamuns.
Shrikhanda is worse, with half as much sugar as you eat. So if you eat two bowls of sugar, you have had atleast one bowl of raw plain sugar, equivalent of 150gm, i.e. 30 teaspoons)

But let us ignore all the sugars from all the fried stuff you eat, like dhoklas, chips, bhakarwadis, etc etc. Barring these, we still come across thousands of reasons to have sugar, for example, energy drinks, beer, juices, coffees, birthday cakes, cupcakes, donuts, chocolate bars, breakfast bars, energy bars etc. etc.

So what we are counting is just the tip of the iceberg for any normal human being.

So the count is:                                                                         Teaspoons            Grams
From daily things:            (18 * 365)            =                             6570                       31174.65
From weekly things:       (24 * 52)               =                             1248                       5921.76
From monthly things:     (90 * 12)               =                              1080                       5124.6

Total                                                                      =                  8898                       42221.01

That comes to a mind boggling 42.22 Kilograms.

So if you weigh an average Indian weight, then you eat more than half your body weight in sugar.

Each teaspoons sugar 16 calories of energy. So in a year, you have 168884.04 calories being consumed.

Let us see what it takes to burn these off:

If an average weighted (170 pounds) walks at a moderate pace for one hour, he burns of 270 calories.
To burn off all these calories, you will need to walk for 625.5 hours.

So you would have to keep walking for 26.5 days in your life to burn the minimum amount of sugar you eat. And this just makes up for the artificial sugar you eat :)
